We live in an anxious time: Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, we faced in the west a host of challenges to what seemed a stable and unchanging order. That order, the legacy of World War II is no longer stable but is passing away, pressured by economic changes, populism, and a new nationalism. It is imperative that we think about what is changing and how we can respond. But, although political changes are the most visible element of the change, we cannot think well about it without also thinking about challenges in education and culture, which include the continuing shift away from humanistic education and the rise of multiculturalism and the power of social media. These are all difficult problems, but our tradition provides resources to help us orient ourselves.
